Mexico’s National Drink- and it’s not beer or tequila.

Coco water is all the rage in the States and Canada.  I'm here to attest if you've been drinking those cartons of coco water from the grocery store you really don't have any idea what the real deal tastes like!  Here along the Pacific coast of Mexico we have access to an endless supply of fresh coconuts.   There is nothing like a sitting on the beach in Melaque and enjoying a fresh coconut.

Nearly all beachside restaurants have coconuts, you simply order one and they whack it open with a large machete, stick a straw into it and bring it to your table.  If you want the health benefits drink it plain, but if you are in a festive mood you can also order a "Coco Loco" which is spiked with Rum.  After you finish your drink ask the waiter to cut open the coconut and enjoy the flesh with salt, lime and chili.

I was at a ranch last week and filmed the harvesting of coconut trees.  Keep in mind these trees are 50-60 feet high and require a man to climb up, tie-off and cut the fruit from that height.  Horses bring the downed fruit to trucks which are loaded up and then delivered to nearby towns.  These ranchers sell the coconuts for 5 pesos each, by the time you get yours at restaurant you will pay 15 pesos, or just over one dollar.  Not a bad deal!  No Mexican vacation is complete without a fresh coconut on the beach and at only a dollar a pop I suggest more than one!
